  • The figures includes those independent schools who chose to make a return.
  • Figures for 2008 are based on revised data. Those for other years are based on final data.
  • Due to the removal of borderlining in 2008, figures for 2008 are not directly comparable to previous years. It is estimated that this will reduce the percentage of pupils achieving the expected level by between 0.2 - 1.2 percemt.
  • 'Other Levels' include:
    • A (pupils absent)
    • T (pupil working at the level of the assessment but unable to access the test)
    • B (pupils working below the level of the test)
    • N (pupils who failed to register a level)
    • W (pupils who are "working towards" Level 1 but have not yet achieved the standards needed for Level 1)
    • Levels 1 & 6
    • Level 6 was valid from 1995 - 2002 only (no pupils achieved this level in these years)
    • Levels W and 1 were valid in 1995 only
  • Level 2 is not valid for reading and writing.
